History and Profile of Kirchheim Publishers

Kirchheim Publishers (German: Kirchheim-Verlag) is one of the oldest publishing houses in Germanyfounded in the city of Mainz, 1736. The name of the founder was Johann Philipp Ungleich, who held the position of ‘Electoral Publisher and Book Binder of the University’! With succeeding generations, this publishing house grew into an enterprise closely bound to the University and, above all, the Archbishop of Mainz. It wasn’t until 1834 that the name Kirchheim (Franz Kirchheim) appeared. Since 1903, the company’s official title has been Verlag Kirchheim + Co GmbH (‘Verlag’ in English: ‘Publishers’). The original building was destroyed in 1942 during the Second World War. In 1954, it was re-built at 41 Kaiserstrasse, where it still stands today.

Before the Second World War, Kirchheim was the publisher of catholic school books. It even published a catholic daily newspaper for Mainz and its surrounding districts. This, however, was outlawed in 1933 by the National Socialists. After the war, the titles ‘Diabetes Journal’ and ‘Tankstelle’ (Eng: ‘Service Station’) were established in 1952 and 1955, respectively.

The pedagogical and, above all, the ecclesiastical commitments were phased out in the 1980s, to make way for further expansion in the medical field.

It was the Diabetes Journal, having already been launched in 1952, on which Kirchheim’s specialization in diabetes could be firmly consolidated. Little by little, Kirchheim has systematically published journals, books and various educational material, has founded diabetes events and several diabetes internet platforms. In this way, Kirchheim Publishers has created its unique diabetes profile.

Apart from the subject of diabetes, Kirchheim covers many other areas in medicine. In 1979, the successful journal for doctors, ‘Der Allgemeinarzt’ (Eng: ‘The General Practitioner’), was established. The field of paediatrics is covered with the title ‘Kinderärztliche Praxis’, and nephrology with ‘Der Nierenpatient – Zeitschrift für Nierenkranke’, all of which have developed tremendously in recent years.

Today, Kirchheim represents a modern and competent communications enterprise, in which the discriminating needs of its readers and clients are constantly being met in the form of journals, books, internet portals, services and events.
